Description
Euphorbia is genus of flowering plants. They are also commonly referred to as spurge. Poinsettia belongs to the same genus. Euphorbia is a big genus comprising of about 2000 members, making it one of the most prolific flowering plants. The flower itself are very tiny and they are usually unisex. In this image, you can see both the female and male flowers. The female flower sports a green ovary with 3 styles and stigmas under which is the involucre (the green leaf-like pad). The other is the male flower with stamen comprising of the anther and filament.
The plant gets its name from Euphorbos, the Greek physician in the cour of King Juba II, around 50 years BCE. Euphorbos identify that the plant can be used as a powerful laxative. The name of the genus was bestowed by Carl Linnaeus, the renowned swedish bontanist, in the physician's honor.
