Artist's Description

Big Island's Green Sand beach known as Papakolea Beach is one of only four green sand beaches in the world. The other three green sand beaches are Talofofo beach, Guam; Punta Cormorant on Florenan Island in Galapagos Islands; Hornindalsvatnet, Norway. The beach gets its distinctive sand coloration due to oilvine sand which over ages has eroded out of the enclosing volcanic cone or tuff ring. Papapolea Beach is about 3 miles east of Ka Lea or South Point (which also happens to be the southern most point of United States) and only accessible by foot or by 4x4s, use of which is restricted.

About Aashish Vaidya

Aashish Vaidya

I am Portland, Oregon based photographer. I am fascinated by many genres, but I particularly love travel and abstract photography. I immensely enjoy the process of taking images. It gives me an opportunity to slow down, immerse myself into the scene. I love that feeling of complete absorption, when you get into a flow, a zenlike, meditative state. I hope that my images convey this same sense of immersion and allow the viewer to feel similar emotions.
