Description
Section of the Great Wall is located in Juyongguan area, few miles north of Beijing.
The Great Wall has been rebuilt, maintained and expanded over many generations and many dynasties, with the express purpose of defense, border control including collection of taxes along the Silk Route, and controlling migration of people.
Much of the existing wall in the present day comes from the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644 CE). An impressive architectural feat, the Great Wall with all its branches, according to some survey is measured to be over 13,000 miles (or over 21,000 km). The Great Wall was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987. It was also included as one of the New 7 Wonders of the World list, a popularity poll organized by the New7Wonders Foundation.
