Description
Cluster of white rhododendrons. The name from ancient greek is rose tree. Rhodon is rose and dendron is tree. Azaleas is a subgenra of the Rhodendron genus which consist of over 1000+ species. Rhododenrons usually have 10 stamens (with anthers and filaments), whereas Azaleas have 5.
Rhododendrons are everywhere in the Pacific Northwest including Oregon. It is a state flower of neighboring Washington state (as well as West Virginia). It is the national flower of Nepal and state tree of two India states of Sikkim and Uttarkhand, and state flowers of two others - Himchal Pradesh and Nagaland. The flowers usually booms from late winter to early summer.
