Cluster of budding rhododendrons with only a single bloom has unfurled. The name from ancient greek is rose tree. Rhodon is rose and dendron is tree. Azaleas is a subgenra of the Rhodendron genus which consist of over 1000+ species. Rhododenrons usually have 10 stamens (with anthers and filaments), whereas Azaleas have 5.
Rhododendrons are everywhere in the Pacific Northwest including Oregon. It is a state flower of neighboring Washington state (as well as West Virginia). It is the national flower of Nepal and state tree of two India states of Sikkim and Uttarkhand, and state flowers of two others - Himchal Pradesh and Nagaland. The flowers usually booms from late winter to early summer.
I am Portland, Oregon based photographer. I am fascinated by many genres, but I particularly love travel and abstract photography. I immensely enjoy the process of taking images. It gives me an opportunity to slow down, immerse myself into the scene. I love that feeling of complete absorption, when you get into a flow, a zenlike, meditative state. I hope that my images convey this same sense of immersion and allow the viewer to feel similar emotions.
